Leonard Nimoy’s second directorial effort in the Star Trek film franchise is a fast, funny, crowd-pleasing adventure that finds the whole Trek crew traveling back in time from the 23rd century to present-day (i.e., mid-1980s) San Francisco in order to save the future! “ Satisfying this is easily the most absurd of the Star Trek stories – and yet, oddly enough, it is also the best, the funniest and the most enjoyable.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun- Times In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the beloved series returns to one of the favorite themes of the original TV show – time travel – to bring Kirk, Spock, Mc Coy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov from the 23rd century to modern-day San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe threating to destroy Earth by evaporating the oceans and obliterating the atmosphere. The probe is emitting a mysterious message – a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth’s destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth – in their captured Klingon starship – to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to communicate peacefully with the alien probe. However, what the brave Enterprise crew hasn’t counted on is navigating big city life on Earth, circa 1986 – a world of punk rock, fast food and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything they’ve ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy. With Star Trek IV, director Nimoy keeps things lighter and looser than in previous installments, filling the story with humor, action and affectionate banter between our favorite Trek characters, all of which helped this become one of the biggest box-office successes in the “classic Trek” series. ( Dir. by Leonard Nimoy, 1986, USA, 119 mins., Rated PG).
Theatrical release poster by Bob Peak Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a 1986 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the fourth feature film based on Star Trek, and is a sequel to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). It completes the story arc begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and continued in The Search for Spock. Intent on returning home to Earth to face trial for their actions in the previous films, the former crew of the USS Enterprise finds the planet in grave danger from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to Earth's past to find whales who can answer the probe's call. After directing The Search for Spock, cast member Leonard Nimoy was asked to direct the next feature, and given greater freedom regarding the film's content. Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett conceived a story with an environmental message and no clear-cut villain. Dissatisfied with the first screenplay produced by Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes, Paramount hired The Wrath of Khan writer and director Nicholas Meyer. Meyer and Bennett divided the story between them and wrote different parts of the script, requiring approval from Nimoy, lead actor William Shatner, and Paramount. Principal photography commenced on February 24, 1986. Unlike previous Star Trek films, The Voyage Home was shot extensively on location; many real settings and buildings were used as stand-ins for scenes set around and in the city of San Francisco. Special effects firm Industrial Light but it was enough that the first film was made.  It set up the possibility that the others would follow.) Making the Trip Star Trek IV was also the first film in which the crew of the Enterprise would travel in time; it has therefore also traveled to our discussion of temporal anomalies. Continuing from Star Trek III, the skeleton crew of the Enterprise is returning home in a stolen Klingon Bird of Prey, having blown up the original Enterprise NCC-1701 to get it.  They are departing from Vulcan to stand trial for their unlawful and irresponsible actions in the rescue of Spock's body in direct violation of Star Fleet orders.  However, Star Fleet has its hands full at the moment:  some huge alien device has attacked the earth, vaporizing the oceans, and threatening to destroy all life on the surface in the process.  Becoming aware of the problem, Mr. Spock determines that the device is trying to get a response from the long-extinct humpback whale.  Kirk determines that the best hope for the world is for his tiny crew to take their ship back to the twentieth century, steal a couple of whales, and bring them back to the present to reply to the.
